Maya — Joyo Barefoot Tester

On a 14-mile dirt road outside Bend, Oregon in October 2024, the heel of a competitor's so-called "minimal" trail shoe came apart at mile 9. I was wearing them so Joyo wouldn't have to ship them. That's the job.

I'm Maya. I'm Joyo's barefoot tester. Not a doctor, not a clinician, not a physical therapist. I wear shoes for a living and write down what happens.

What I actually do

Every pair Joyo wants to release goes on my feet for a minimum of 4 weeks before approval. I measure sole flexibility (can it roll into a tube), toe-box width at the metatarsal line, weight in grams on a kitchen scale, and how the upper holds up after roughly 60 miles of mixed walking, hiking, and standing around at the grocery store.

If a sole cracks, a seam splits, or the toe-box squeezes my third and fourth toes after a long day, I write it down and the pair goes back to the factory. About one in four samples I test never make it to the website.

How I got here

I started running barefoot in 2020 after a year of plantar fasciitis that three pairs of cushioned trainers made worse. I joined Joyo in 2023. Since then I've tested 80+ pairs across 6 brands, including most of the competitors people compare Joyo to. I keep wearing the good ones from other brands too. It would be weird not to.

What I will not do

I will not tell you what shoe is right for your foot. I will not diagnose plantar fasciitis, bunions, neuromas, or anything else. If something hurts in your feet for more than a couple of weeks, see a podiatrist. For medical accuracy on the articles we publish, we send drafts to Dr. Howard Brin, DPM, and he flags anything that overreaches.

What you can expect from me

Honest test notes. Weights, widths, flex scores. The pair I quietly stopped wearing after week two and why. The pair I'm still wearing on weekends a year later. If you want the numbers and the field notes before you spend money, that's what I'm here for. Start with the current lineup, and if a model isn't on the site, it's because it didn't pass.
