Ground Truth — The Podcast

Ground Truth

Two-host editorial podcast on feet, walking, running, and the research most podiatrists never quote. Each episode walks through actual peer-reviewed papers (Lieberman, Davis, Maffetone, AAP) and ends with a real wear-test note from Maya, Joyo Barefoot's tester.

EPISODE 1 · SEASON 1

Barefoot Running: Why Your Feet Were Built for 26 Miles a Day

The orthotic industry is built on a study that was never replicated.

The shareable number: Tarahumara: 0% plantar fasciitis. US runners: 10%.

Maya's note: "I tested 6 'cushioned' brand-name running shoes against barefoot on a 30-day commute. Calf soreness peaked week 2 in barefoot. By week 4, 0 pain. The cushioned shoes — 4/6 had calf or knee issues by end of test."
EPISODE 2 · SEASON 1

Wide Toe Box Shoes: 30-Day Experiment That Changed My Balance

Most adults can no longer fully splay their toes. The fix takes 30 days.

The shareable number: Average US shoe toe-box: 95mm. Foot at full splay: 103mm. The 8mm gap is where bunions live.

Maya's note: "I measured 31 kids' feet at a Joyo pop-up. Twenty-two were under age 6, all could fully splay. By age 12, only 4 of 9 could. Shoes don't reverse fast — but they slow what nature wants to do."

About the show

Ground Truth is the podcast arm of Joyo Barefoot. New episodes drop every Tuesday. We cite real research and we name the researchers — Daniel Lieberman, Irene Davis, Phil Maffetone, the AAP — and we stay out of medical-advice territory. If a claim shows up in an episode, the paper is in the show notes.

Maya, our wear-tester, has personally walked, run, and field-tested every Joyo shoe over the past 4 years before it ships. She's not a clinician. She's the person who knows what the shoes feel like at mile 6 in cold rain.
