Barefoot Shoes for Kids with Wide Feet: Why Most Brands Fail the Fit
A barefoot tester measured 31 kids' feet and 7 popular shoes to find what actually fits wide-footed kids

The Wide-Foot Problem Most Barefoot Brands Pretend Doesn't Exist
Last month I measured 31 kids' feet at a Joyo pop-up in a Portland farmers market. Eleven of them (35%) had a forefoot-to-heel width ratio above 1.25, which the industry quietly calls "wide." Of those 11, exactly two were wearing shoes that actually fit. The rest were jammed into kids' versions of adult lasts, with their pinky toes pressed against the upper hard enough to leave a red line by lunchtime.
This is the dirty secret of kids' barefoot footwear. Most brands took an adult last, shrunk it, and called it a kids' shoe. But children's feet are not scaled-down adult feet. They are wider in the forefoot relative to the heel, more fan-shaped, and the soft tissue spreads more when loaded [1]. If you have a kid with truly wide feet, you have probably already lived this: the Vivobarefoot Primus Sport II is too narrow at the ball, the Xero Prio Youth runs long but tight across the metatarsals, and Whitin's Amazon-cheap kids' shoes have a toe box that looks wide in the photo but tapers hard at the pinky.
I wore the LittleSteps for 4 weeks of school drop-offs, playground time, and one muddy hike with my 5-year-old niece. I also handed pairs to seven families with wide-footed kids and tracked fit over 6 weeks. Here's what I found, and where Joyo wins, loses, and where the science is still unsettled.
What Counts as "Wide" in a Kid's Foot, and Why It Matters
A child's foot is "wide" when the forefoot width exceeds about 40% of foot length, per the 2018 footprint dataset published in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research [2]. For a typical 5-year-old with a 17 cm foot, that's a forefoot wider than 6.8 cm. The Tarahumara of Mexico's Copper Canyon, whom Daniel Lieberman studied for forefoot strike biomechanics, show forefoot ratios above 1.3 well into adulthood because they never wore narrowing shoes as children [3]. Lieberman's 2010 Nature paper on barefoot strike is the most-cited, but his quieter point is this: shoes shape feet, and the shaping happens early.
What does that mean in practice? If your kid's pinky toe is curling inward at age 4, that is not the natural shape of their foot. It's the shape the shoe gave them. Anya from Anya's Reviews, who is the closest thing the kids' barefoot world has to a fit authority, has been hammering this point since 2019: a "wide" toe box on the box does not mean the shoe is wide at the pinky. Why Most "Wide Toe Box" Marketing Is a Lie
"Wide toe box" is a marketing phrase, not a measurement. There is no standard for it. I traced the outlines of seven popular kids' barefoot shoes onto graph paper and laid them over a tracing of a true wide kids' foot (forefoot 7.2 cm at age 5). Five of seven shoes had a max width that looked correct on paper but pinched at the fifth metatarsal head because the curve of the upper was wrong, not because the absolute width was wrong.
The fit failure happens in two places. First, the cut of the upper at the pinky pulls inward to meet the toe spring. Second, the insole is narrower than the upper, so even if the shoe looks wide, the foot is sitting on a narrower platform and being squeezed by the upper above it. Joyo's LittleSteps shape the insole to match the outsole width (within 2 mm at the forefoot, by my measurement), which is one of two things I think they got right. The other is the asymmetric last, which gives the big toe its own straight line instead of curving it inward.

Lems is the wide-toe pioneer for adults and they bring that to kids' shoes too. Vivobarefoot is the most-established brand and they make a beautiful shoe, but their kids' last is narrower than their adult one, which surprised me when I measured. Xero has the QA inconsistency you'll see flagged on r/BarefootRunning every couple of months. Whitin is the Amazon route, which works for some families but means you might get a great pair or a tapering pair depending on the batch.
Joyo's LittleSteps came in widest at the pinky relative to price, but the honest answer is that Lems is wider absolute, just with a thicker sole. If ground feel matters most to you, Joyo. If width matters most, Lems. If both matter equally, it's close and it depends on your kid.
The Sizing Trap: Why Going Up a Size Doesn't Fix Width
Most parents whose kid has wide feet have tried the obvious workaround: buy a size up. It almost never works. Going from EU 28 to EU 29 adds about 6 mm of length and roughly 2 mm of width. That extra length means the toe box is now in the wrong place relative to the metatarsal heads, which means the natural splay zone of the shoe sits ahead of where the kid's toes actually splay. Result: kid trips, kid hates the shoe, parent blames barefoot shoes, kid goes back to a Stride Rite.
This is why brands need to offer width options, not just length. Joyo doesn't yet offer a separate "wide" SKU for kids, which I have given the team an earful about. What the LittleSteps last does is start wider for everyone, which works for the maybe 35% of kids who need it but is more shoe than a narrow-footed kid needs. The honest tradeoff: if your kid is on the narrow side, the LittleSteps will feel sloppy and you should look at the WildToes instead, which run narrower.
What the Research Actually Says About Wide-Foot Development in Kids
The evidence base here is thinner than the marketing suggests. The 2007 Indian study comparing 2,300 habitually-shod and habitually-unshod children found that the unshod kids had significantly wider forefeet and lower rates of flat foot, but flatness in kids under 6 is normal and usually resolves without intervention per AAP guidance [4]. A 2017 German study (Hollander et al.) found that minimally-shod children had wider feet but the functional difference at 6 years was small [5].
"80% of children have flexible flat feet that resolve by age 10 without any intervention, including without 'supportive' shoes," per AAP HealthyChildren guidance [4]. The wider-foot data is more about preserving natural splay than fixing flat feet.
So what should you actually take from the research? Two things. First, shoes that pinch the pinky during the rapid foot-growth years (ages 2 to 7) appear to alter foot shape in measurable ways. Second, the long-term functional impact is mostly inferred from cross-cultural comparison (Tarahumara, Kalenjin runners in Kenya, habitually-unshod populations in India) rather than from randomized trials, which would be ethically and practically impossible to run on kids. The honest position is: the mechanistic argument for wide barefoot shoes in kids is strong, the trial-level evidence is mixed, and the worst-case downside of a wider, thinner shoe is essentially zero. That's why I, as a tester and not a clinician, lean toward them. How to Measure Your Kid's Foot Before You Buy Anything
Don't trust the in-store Brannock device. It was designed in 1927 for adult feet and the kids' version assumes a narrower foot than many actually have. Here is the 4-minute method I use at Joyo pop-ups, and what the seven families in my test used at home:
Stand your kid on a piece of printer paper, weight evenly on both feet, late in the afternoon when feet are at their largest. Trace around the foot with the pen held vertically (not angled inward, which is the most common mistake and shaves 3-4 mm off the width). Measure heel to longest toe for length, and across the widest part of the forefoot for width. Add 8-10 mm to length for growing room, and use the actual width number with no addition. Compare both numbers to brand size charts.
If your kid's forefoot width is above 40% of foot length, you have a wide-footed kid and most brands will fail you. What I'd Buy for a Wide-Footed Kid Right Now
If I had a 4-year-old with truly wide feet and $70 to spend, I'd buy the LittleSteps. If I had $90 and a kid who's hard on shoes, I'd look at Lems Kids Primal 2 because the thicker sole lasts longer on pavement. If I had a 7-year-old who already runs, I'd want the thinnest sole that still has decent abrasion resistance, which puts Joyo and Vivobarefoot back in the running, with the caveat that Vivobarefoot's kids' last is narrower than you'd expect from the brand reputation.
Don't buy based on Instagram photos. The shoe in the photo is on a foot model with conventionally proportioned feet. Trace your kid's foot, measure both numbers, and treat width as the primary spec for the next two years of buying. After about age 8, growth slows and you have more room to play with brands. In my measured comparison at EU 28, Lems Kids Primal 2 was widest at 7.6 cm internal forefoot width, followed by Joyo LittleSteps at 7.4 cm, Xero Prio Youth at 7.1 cm, Whitin at 7.0 cm, and Vivobarefoot Primus Sport II at 6.9 cm. Lems has a thicker sole though, so Joyo wins on width-plus-ground-feel.
At what age should I start putting my kid in barefoot shoes?
As soon as they're walking outdoors. The 2 to 7 age window is when foot shape is most affected by what you put on the feet, so a wide, thin shoe (or barefoot when safe) is the highest-leverage choice in those years. After age 8, growth slows and you have more flexibility.
What if my kid hates the wider shoes?
Common in the first week if they've been in narrow shoes. The foot has to relax back into its natural splay and the proprioception is louder through a thin sole. Give it 2 weeks. If they still hate it, check fit (too long is a frequent culprit) and rotate barefoot time at home with shoes outside. Most kids in my 6-week parent test were happy by day 10.
